PFAS – Meeting in Howell January 23rd

An event January 23rd will feature an analytical chemist who will educate community members about a chemical contamination that has spread through local waterways.

The League of Women Voters of the Brighton/Howell Area is sponsoring the PFAS informational session, which will be held Wednesday, January 23rd, at the Howell Carnegie Library. Per- and polyfluroalkyl substances, known as PFAS and PFOS, are man-made chemicals that are resistant to heat, oil and water.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in August issued an expanded “Do Not Eat” fish advisory for all fish in the Huron River in Livingston, Oakland, and Washtenaw Counties. The advisory came after fish from Kent Lake were discovered to have high levels of PFOS.

Community education efforts are continuing, as health officials work to inform residents of what they need to know about the contamination and what’s being done to mitigate it. Next week’s event will feature Stephen Brown, a PhD trained analytical chemist with 45 years of experience. Dr. Brown will provide an overview of PFAS and answer guests’ questions. The seminar will take place from 6:30 to 8pm in the Meabon Room, which is on the bottom level of the library located in downtown Howell. The event is free and open to the public. (DK)

Christmas Caroling!

UPDATE – 12/19/2018:

If snow, we’re Caroling!

If rain, we’re canceling 🙁

John and Nancy Greko are organizing an evening of Christmas Caroling in the neighborhood this season. We are looking at the evening of Friday, December 21.  We have many song books and even jingle bells for ringing. Participants would just need a flashlight or penlight Meet at 5206 Gallagher at 6pm.

One hour of caroling then all are welcome back at our home for hot cocoa and cookies.

THE RESULTS ARE IN AND THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!

We were astounded by the number of respondents.  It is evident the community is ready for a heightened park experience!

Each of us has a vested interest in the park and this is the first step to much needed improvements of the joint access.  Here are some of the results:

Of the 14 assets or groups of assets surveyed, the top five priorities are:

  1. Wood Seawall
  2. Swimming (Raft, Buoys, Rope)
  3. Boat Launch (Ramp, Dock)
  4. Pontoon Slip Area
  5. Porta Potty (Potty, Fence)

The five assets with the most “poor” ratings are:

  1. Wood Seawall
  2. Sporting (Basketball, Volleyball)
  3. Pontoon Slip Area
  4. Porta Potty (Potty, Fence)
  5. Boat Launch (Ramp, Dock)

The most alarming but not unexpected – Over a third of all the joint access assets are in poor condition!
