Areas of Hamburg and Green Oak townships will participate in aerial spraying for mosquitoes

Areas of Hamburg and Green Oak townships will participate in aerial spraying for mosquitoes after a horse was found to have Eastern equine encephalitis.

“In collaboration with (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services), it was determined that an aerial spray of the impacted area will lower the mosquito population and reduce the public health risk of contracting Eastern equine encephalitis in both humans and animals,” the Livingston County Health Department said in a news release.

New Cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Confirmed in SW Michigan

The State of Michigan, Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), has issued a press release on September 17, reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites as four additional cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) have been confirmed in humans in Southwest Michigan.

The new cases expand the geographic area affected by human EEE cases to include Barry, Cass and Van Buren counties, along with previously identified cases in Kalamazoo and Berrien counties. Two of these additional cases, in Cass and Van Buren counties, were fatal, as was one earlier case in Kalamazoo County.

According to the MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy “Michigan is currently experiencing its worst Eastern Equine Encephalitis outbreak in more than a decade. The ongoing cases reported in humans and animals and the severity of this disease illustrate the importance of taking precautions against mosquito bites.”

The MDHHS recommends that Michigan residents stay healthy by following these steps to avoid mosquito bites:

  1. Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-registered product to exposed skin or clothing, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions for use.
  2. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites.
  3. Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outside.
  4. Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
  5. Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas.

For more information, all employees are encouraged to review the original MDHSS press release linked here.

Pontoon Removal Notice

It’s that time of year again where we begin the process of scheduling the removal, winterization and shrink wrapping our boats. Members of the community have reported that the earliest availability for these services is already pushing into mid October. If you have not already began this process, please do so asap!

It is extremely important this year that Pontoon slip owners at the park remove their boats and poles by October 31st. A new seawall installation contract is almost complete and cannot move forward until all Pontoons and poles are removed.

We look forward to the installation of the long overdue seawall and need cooperation from all the slip owners if we wish to keep this project on track for completion by next year.

Thank You!

New Park Gate Lock

As many of you have noticed there is a new padlock at the entrance to the Park.  In order to re-lock it, your key must remain in the lock in the vertical position. Please remember to replace the chain and re-lock our Park every time you enter or exit. The key you already have will still work in the new lock.

Thanks to all from your JAC

SPBHA Dues Increase Results

Bluffs Homeowners – Thank you for voting
the proposal to change the annual dues has passed!

After the meeting on Tuesday July 16 we had 42 yes votes and 3 no votes. We continued to accept votes after Tuesday and now have 51 yes votes, a full 2/3 of our HOA members. The board planned to accept ballots through the end of July, as voting was not “closed” as of our Tuesday evening meeting date.

The new dues amount of $125 is effective with next year’s dues payment March 2020. Homeowners who want to take advantage of a dues price of $105 and prepay up to 3 years of dues can make out your check to SPBHOA and mail it to our PO Box 612 Hamburg, MI 48139. We plan to mail a letter out by the first week of August to make sure all HOA members are notified about this prepay option.

Thank you for your support
